This year's World Suicide Prevention Day has been announced - Saturday 10th September. This year's theme for the day is ‘Creating Hope Through Action’. Suicide is a Global Issue and it's prevention is of paramount importance to those who's lives are blighted with such mental health misery that they feel their only answer is to take their own lives. Issues such as bullying, home life stresses, work based stress and workplace bullying, performance pressures at work and yes in school, and the modern scurge of social media harrasment and negative body image; are just a few of the issues which can lead to sucidal thoughts and in too many cases - the loss of life. Make no mistake, childrern as well as adults are becoming more at risk of suicide than ever before.
CWU's Greater Mersey Amal Branhch Area Safety Rep and Mental Health First Aider trainer Jamie McGovern, says in the latest Sway document produced by the CWU North West Mental Health Forum: 'More than 800,000 people take their lives each year across the world. In the UK and Republic Of Ireland, more than 6,000 people die by suicide a year – an average of 18 a day. Reaching out to people who are going through a difficult time can be a game changer. People who are feeling low or suicidal often feel worthless and think that no-one cares. Small things like hearing from friends or family, feeling listened to by a colleague or just being told that ‘it’s ok to talk’ can make an enormous difference.'
